I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when it comes to this music shit, above all I’m a fan. I mostly listen to classic rock, classic rap and classic rap rock, but I try to stay curious about what the “F” is going on in the modern music world. “After the jump” is a bunch of stuff I’ve enjoyed so far in 2014. By no means a definitive list of even my own personal listening habits, this is more of a freestyle celebration of some music that has gotten me skied in 2K14. No THUNDER ZONE included because that is it’s own goddamn post. Let’s go!!!
Tomorrow (Wednesday September 3rd) I turn 28 years old. Usually I don’t do shit on my birthday but this year I just happened to get added to an already existing bill at a classic Thunder Zone stomping ground. I’m talking about Death By Audio in Brooklyn and I’m also talking about Ed Schrader’s Music Beat (plus the insane What Cheer? Brigade). ESMB are one of my favorite bands so it is a present to myself to rage with them on my birthday. Should be a good gig. See you in the mosh pit.
The Midwest has a storied tradition when it comes to pounding fucked-style hardcore electronic music. I’m talking gabber, breakcore, hard acid… All the sick shit. I’m talking labels like ADDICT, DROP BASS, ZOD, DISTORT… Once again — all the sick shit. STAGEDIVER is one of the few people in the game keeping this fire burning and he does it right. Tyler has been a friend of mine for a long time (I even booked his FIRST SHOW EVER with Unicorn Hard-On and more in 2004) and it has been a blast seeing him continue to churn out lo-fi punk electronics of the highest quality year after year. He also runs the awesome label RADIOGRAFFITI that puts out everything from chiptune to insanity gabber.
On my last tour I had the pleasure of playing with Stagediver in Milwaukee. During his set he played a sick remix of my song “Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall” off of my last EP FRONT SEAT OF THE TACOMA. It hit hard in the club and made me excited to be alive and making music. Talking with Tyler after the gig it turned out to be a “smash-up” of my song and the sick Stagediver tune “Raw Deal”. You can watch the youtube above or download the MP3 below. I recommend you play it loud. Enter The Thunder Zone.
Tonight! In Queens! The legendary Los Angeles rager Kyle H. Mabson will be doing a rare NYC DJ set at Trans Pecos. Kyle is a culture jammer operating at the edges of many communities; I consider Mr. Mabson to be a true man of the Modern World. His activities include playing music with notable ragers like XBXRX and Dan Deacon, curating a series of fucked up cover/remix compilations and touring the country doing 3D visual tech work for PRIMUS. Oh, he has also played in like 100 one-off bands that I can only describe as “contemporary art”. You truly can’t fuck with the man’s CV.
ALSO. This event marks the official release of the DJ GEORGE COSTANZA AWARENESS BRACELETS out now on THUNDER ZONE. You can buy them at the show! Costanza will also be on hand, doing a DJ set. And if all of that is not enough to get you out to Queens on a Monday night, we got one of my favorite NYC bands HARIBO throwing down! I played with these guys last fall and they blew my mind. Plus Hitashya! Damn this is going to be a good show.
C U in da pit.
New on THUNDER ZONE: the debut release from mysterious Rock And Roll band BATTY BOYS. This band sent me their record over email and I couldn’t stop listening to it so I put it out. No one knows anything about this band, I don’t even know anything about this band! Where are they from? How many members? Seriously, I have no clue!
“COCK ROCK” sounds like The Germs playing Billy Squier and the result is some sick style American Boogie for 2K14. It’s hard to think of another modern RNR record that captures the feeling that “COCK ROCK” transmits so I’m gonna say that it is Perfect For The Thunder Zone. Give it a shot. Take a shot. Play it loud and Never Surrender Forever.
Check out two BATTY BOYS music videos below.
New record from the legendary ever-changing force of NU AMERICANA known as B L A C K I E (all caps with spaces). You think you know but man you have no idea. This new one sounds like Black Flag playing Pharoah Sanders, no lie. As always it is 100 percent singular and 100 percent sick. You gotta follow your heart.
In a world of bullshitters B L A C K I E is the real deal. Moving through worlds in a way that is honest and playing whatever he feels like… That is the name of the game and few do it on his level. So many people have been influenced by the man that his “Legend” status is not undeserved. Go see him live and understand. A THUNDER ZONE project with B L A C K I E is in the works… Stay tuned.
Over the past few years, THUNDER ZONE rager and American Motivational Speaker SCHWARZ has been throwing down a steady stream of remixes and bootlegs in addition to his run of amazing original “Motivational Club” tunes released on Thunder Zone. TOP 40 BOOTLEGS collects some of his finest remix work all in one place via the legendary LIVEMIXTAPES website and of course it is slamming.
There is so much sick shit here! I can’t even begin to scratch the surface but let’s just say SCHWARZ is a master at navigating culture and just fucking doing it by his own rules. Many exciting modern club styles and tones are represented here, but everything is sucked into SCHWARZ‘s vision and the result is something that transcends the modern middling soundcloud sinkhole.
CHECK IT OUT and below check out the amazing promo SCHWARZ put together for the release that says more than I could ever hope to say.
The one and only JUICEBOXXX AND THE THUNDER ZONE BAND show of the summer will be going all the way down this Friday (8/1/2014) at The Red Light District in Far Rockaway Queens for THE BURNING FLESHTIVAL V. I will be joined by a very special guest for this performance, Colin Langenus from one of my favorite bands of the 2000’s THEUSAISAMONSTER. Can you believe that shit? How fresh is that?
I was living behind the bar at RLD for a few months this winter so I am siked to return to the basement with my RnR band and just jam. This is not a game this is ROCK AND ROLL people and I’m taking it to the limit in the name of everything I love. So come out to the gig, all the ragers are gonna be there. Check out that lineup! Some of the best names in the American Underground no question.
Also let me just say in a very confusing 2014 New York City landscape The Red Light District stands as a beacon of light. Take the train an hour to the end of the city and fucking lose your mind. Then get it back. Then rise above.
See you in the pit.

Country and Rap are coming together to form a new American music and all I can say is: what took so long? Regardless, legendary THUNDER ZONE warrior DJ GEORGE COSTANZA has thrown down the gauntlet and made one of the definitive mixes of 2014. Costanza connects the dots between a lot of different worlds and makes an important statement about American music and culture.
A lot of this music might be “cheesy” to some but to me it is inspirational. More than anything, it is an invitation to creativity and I’m just really excited about the possibilities. Have I been writing Country Rap songs with a Nashville legend? Stay tuned.
