In an insane turn of events I am currently in Innsbruck, Austria, gearing up to play a 6 hour solo set on Saturday in the middle of the mountains. The mysterious superfood company SUPERGOOD flew me in for this very rare, very insane performance situation, part of the Premierentage Festival.
This is a really fucked up moment in time and I must say, I feel fucking crazy. The world is twisted and confusing, and I am just as lost as anyone else. Life keeps going, though. I’m excited to spread whatever insanity I have been developing forever with my music and THUNDER ZONE, and special weird solo freakout sets in Europe are a part of that. There is very little information to spread, if you are in Austria, do some googling, the answer will come to you. Documentation after the fact, no doubt. But if you are doubting, check out this video below. Somehow I was able to break free of the chains of darkness for a three minute very special reunion STATE OF THE THUNDER ZONE in the mountains. For the most part. Who knows. Keep your head up.
The newest release on Thunder Zone is one that I am extremely proud of. A true meeting of the minds. American insanity 2016 style. The beat goes on. Let me lay it down for you: two new songs by LA-via-BMORE duo ODWALLA88 featuring a remix from frequent Zone collaborator and cult rap legend LIL UGLY MANE and art from Max Eisenberg aka DJ DOG DICK.
This is an important release and there is a lot to say (to start, ODWALLA88 are a game changing American punk band, and the remix and artwork are just insane kickers that will blow some minds… only on THUNDER ZONE) but the most important thing of all is that you support the goddamn Thunder Zone and buy a few copies RIGHT HERE. It comes with a sticker insert and is limited to 250 hand numbered copies. Please keep going, kids. The world is a fucked up ball of darkness but we all gotta try our best to stay positive and find some sort of meaning.
Listen, I know the November edition of The Boxxx Report Radio is right up on deck, happening on the same day as the insane and dark United States election… Shit. What does it all mean? Beats me, I’m just seriously trying to stay alive one day at a time style and change my life for the better. It is not easy. Anyways, in case you missed the October Boxxx Report Radio on the great London net station NTS (channel 2), you can check it out right here. It features a mix from Detroit/NYC expert mixmaster Abby plus all the monthly insanity (DJ George Costanza Song Of The Month, Dogs In Ecstasy Mini-Mix) you have come to expect.
NEW YORK CITY. We got a special one cooking up this Saturday night at The Silent Barn in Brooklyn. A rare NYC performance from H-Town’s finest… B L A C K I E… ALL CAPS WITH SPACES, alongside a set from myself (with the East Coast Thunder Zone Band) and Negashi Aramada (AKA BLUNT FANG). Plus a DJing from YUNG MAYNE! Shit, that is a good lineup. If you are unfamiliar with the important work that B L A C K I E has been doing over the past decade plus, may I suggest reading this conversation I had with the man for SEX MAGAZINE?CHECK IT OUT.
Doors open at Midnight, yeah it’s a late night rager, but well worth your time and cash, fucking hit the FB event right here and I’ll see you when I see you. Might just be my only East Coast show of the fall…
It has been a little bit since I last hit you people with a full on THUNDER ZONE UPDATE, so fuck it, here it goes. Last time I yelled at you I was dropping that dig-printed insanity LAST RENAISSANCE shirt, way back in who knows when. But since then, the game has been flipped on its head and all hell is breaking loose in the motherfucking THUNDER ZONE.
Before we get into anything else, I should just share that there has been a THUNDER ZONE BACK TO SCHOOL INSANITY SALE going down over at the THUNDER ZONE WEBSTORE. That’s right, 50 percent off everything with that promo code ZONE2K16 at checkout. Am I crazy for this one? Probably. Is it a wild deal for you? No doubt. So take advantage of this shit, because it is going to be gone by October 1. Get some energy drinks, get some music. Life your life.
Next up. That EXTREME ANIMALS tape: “THIS MUSIC DOES NOT APOLOGIZE: 2002-2008.” I know I mentioned this when I talked about the JUICEBOXXX/EXTREME ANIMALS mini-tour that went down last July/August, but I don’t think I can say enough about this thing: it is a greatest hits of sorts from one of the most underappreciated freakout units of the wild oughts, part of the Paper Rad unit. Cop the tape or download before it is gone, bask in the 7 panel full color foldout collage, bask in the singular rainbow rock insanity.
Then you know I gotta mention this new sticker design, flipped by the one-and-only D. Gookin. Get it at gigs or online. And there is also a new fucked up STATE OF THE THUNDER ZONE that I won’t even embed here but will say that you should CLICK THIS LINK if you want to maybe go crazy with me.
And then, and then… The next release on ZONE is a true doozy. I’m talking a landmark moment for whatever this label/brand/feeling/energy drink company really is (it is still confusing, even to me)… A 7” featuring two new songs by ODWALLA88 and a B-Side remix by LIL UGLY MANE and cover art by MAX EISENBERG aka DJ DOG DICK. Check out a sneak of the cover below:
More info on that soon, it hits the street October 25. Really excited about this release, a true “meeting of the minds” from some of the best bands, artists and rappers going today in the USA freakout game. Beyond the record, there are also some more Thunder Zone surprises in store, so keep watch here and stay positive, make it out of this fucked up year alive. Keep dreaming, even though we are all surrounded by constant darkness.
It started as a newsletter and now it is a radio show: presenting THE BOXXX REPORT RADIO, every second Tuesday of the month on the great London-based internet radio station NTS from 11 AM to 1 PM EST. Playing mostly new-ish music from friends and Thunder Zone affiliates plus just great punk, rap, USA freakout music and whatever else I feel like. Influenced by both John Peel and Funkmaster Flex. High energy. The Boxxx Report Radio: check it out.
The first episode aired a few weeks ago and you can listen to it right here. It introduced some “recurring features” from members of the extended Thunder Zone crew including the DJ George Costanza Song Of The Month and the Dogs In Ecstasy 1-Minute Mix. It also featured an exclusive 20-min mix from the one and only SCHWARZ.
So check it out, and great ready for October and beyond. This world is truly twisted but you gotta keep running.
This weekend, I’m playing a trilogy of shows back where it all started: the Upper Midwest. Got the band with me, you know the drill: fucking shit up in a positive way, live and direct and in your face. Two of the three are with one of my favorite current punk bands, NYC’s SHOW ME THE BODY, so I’m siked. A good one in Madison, too. Fuck it, get in the pit. Live your life.
Some giant JUICEBOXXX/THUNDER ZONE seasonal reports coming soon, stay positive.
Check out the dates below…
09/15 CHICAGO @ SUBTERRANEAN WITH SHOW ME THE BODY, NO DREAMS AND MORIMOTO
09/16 MILWAUKEE @ LINSDAY BUILDING WITH SHOW ME THE BODY AND ZED KENZO
09/17 MADISON @ MICKEY’S WITH DUMB VISION,
Tonight in Los Angeles. I’ve been gone for three years but now I’m back, for less than a week, working on my new record “Freaked Out American Loser.” But that is almost besides the point of this blog post because tonight I’m doing a “B2B” tag team DJ set with my old friend and Thunder Zone collaborator… The one and only SCHWARZ, at his party CLUB ILLUSION. Expect the unexpected. Also djing is Kreayshawn and P. Morris. Talk about a nice bill! More info here. Keep on fighting to change your life.
Next week, I will be going on a four city mini-tour with my old friends EXTREME ANIMALS aka Jacob Ciocci and David Wightman. I have a long history with these two, lets just say we met when I was still in high school and they were on a PAPER RAD tour. I traded them some TROLLS for a bunch of legendary FREE MERCH. Over a decade later and everything has changed, everything is fucked, the world is fucked, my life is fucked, but we all keep going. Because rock and roll needs us, the game needs us. Fuck all the bullshit. The real lifers know. I’m just trying to find a little bit of meaning and freak out.
Why this tour, why now? Well, I’m putting out an Extreme Animals anthology on my fucking confusing-but-sick label THUNDER ZONE and we are hitting the road to celebrate. More on that release very soon. Four days, four cities, a bunch of great bands (Angels In America, Gobby, Flintstones and Val M. aka Unicorn Hard-On to name but a few) one car, one van, THOM FROM SWEATHEART on guitar with me, MIKE B THE G (AKA CITIBIKE MIKE also known as D. Gookin) on drums. Yeah, I got the band. You gotta keep running, kids. RIP ALAN VEGA. I’m losing my mind. See you on the road. Tour dates below.
7/28 PHILADELPHIA @ Lava Space Facebook
7/29 QUEENS NEW YORK CITY @ Trans-Pecos Facebook
7/30 PROVIDENCE @ Tommy’s Place Facebook
7/31 BOSTON @ Gross Outlet Facebook
Got a sick lil Heartland mini-tour rager on deck, as always I am happy to play shows and live life. If I wasn’t truly siked I would’ve stopped doing this dumbass shit a long time ago. That is a goddamn fact. Word to the wise: if you want to go through this world with no compromise you are going to hit a lot of brick walls, but fuck it, that’s what it’s all about. What do you want me to do? Start a hardware-only techno project?
Anyways… Playing an extremely intimate early 8 p.m. show at the legendary Circle A (“A Real Adventure”) in Milwaukee on Thursday, June 16 with Queen Tut then a show the next day at Eagles Club in Minneapolis with Frankie Teardrop and more. It is the last Frankie Teardrop show ever! Should be one for the books. This little run is capped off with a festie show in Horicon, Wisconsin. It’s the Jersey Street Music Festival.
I hope to see all you kids out there, in the pit, just doing the best to stay alive. Go get a soda, you gotta do what you gotta do. I’ll be there, on the stage, with the band behind me, trying my best to prove something the only way I know how.
