It has been a little bit since I last hit you people with a full on THUNDER ZONE UPDATE, so fuck it, here it goes. Last time I yelled at you I was dropping that dig-printed insanity LAST RENAISSANCE shirt, way back in who knows when. But since then, the game has been flipped on its head and all hell is breaking loose in the motherfucking THUNDER ZONE.
Before we get into anything else, I should just share that there has been a THUNDER ZONE BACK TO SCHOOL INSANITY SALE going down over at the THUNDER ZONE WEBSTORE. That’s right, 50 percent off everything with that promo code ZONE2K16 at checkout. Am I crazy for this one? Probably. Is it a wild deal for you? No doubt. So take advantage of this shit, because it is going to be gone by October 1. Get some energy drinks, get some music. Life your life.
Next up. That EXTREME ANIMALS tape: “THIS MUSIC DOES NOT APOLOGIZE: 2002-2008.” I know I mentioned this when I talked about the JUICEBOXXX/EXTREME ANIMALS mini-tour that went down last July/August, but I don’t think I can say enough about this thing: it is a greatest hits of sorts from one of the most underappreciated freakout units of the wild oughts, part of the Paper Rad unit. Cop the tape or download before it is gone, bask in the 7 panel full color foldout collage, bask in the singular rainbow rock insanity.
Then you know I gotta mention this new sticker design, flipped by the one-and-only D. Gookin. Get it at gigs or online. And there is also a new fucked up STATE OF THE THUNDER ZONE that I won’t even embed here but will say that you should CLICK THIS LINK if you want to maybe go crazy with me.
And then, and then… The next release on ZONE is a true doozy. I’m talking a landmark moment for whatever this label/brand/feeling/energy drink company really is (it is still confusing, even to me)… A 7” featuring two new songs by ODWALLA88 and a B-Side remix by LIL UGLY MANE and cover art by MAX EISENBERG aka DJ DOG DICK. Check out a sneak of the cover below:
More info on that soon, it hits the street October 25. Really excited about this release, a true “meeting of the minds” from some of the best bands, artists and rappers going today in the USA freakout game. Beyond the record, there are also some more Thunder Zone surprises in store, so keep watch here and stay positive, make it out of this fucked up year alive. Keep dreaming, even though we are all surrounded by constant darkness.
In support of the vinyl release of my most recent LP HEARTLAND 99 on Vinyl International Records, I made a new music video for the last song on the release: “FOLLOW YOUR FUCKED UP DREAMS.” I shot it with my friend Joe DeNardo (of the band GROWING) and I think it works best if you go HD, full screen, headphones on. Freaking out is the name of the game and if it’s not in your heart, why bother? But if you gotta get it out, you gotta get it out. It’s never too late to change your life.
New York City is a twisted hellscape but I still have faith in all the losers and the dreamers. Rock and roll 4 ever.
Watch the video above, buy HEARTLAND 99 on vinyl here, and download it on bandcamp here. Also check out a short piece about the video in The Fader.
Making records and playing shows: its what I do. What do you want me to say? I just can’t help myself. It’s a thing that is inside of me and I’ve tried to move on and I’ve tried to deny it but I can’t help myself. So I keep going. Above is footage from a raw gig I recently played at one of my favorite NYC venues, TRANS PECOS (playing there again in two weeks). Oh, and I guess it should be mentioned that this gig got a nice preview writeup in The New Yorker. People trying to make sense of contemporary American music, working it out in print, yeah fuck it why not respect. Check it out below.
A few months ago I went to South By Southwest. I was there for less than twelve hours and in that time I did one DJ set and performed one live concert. I played for less than 20 minutes and then 20 minutes after the show was over, me and the band were already back on the highway. We had to get out. There was no other choice. The popular tech/gadget site The Verge wrote a thing about that one show. It was pretty positive. It was a rock and roll show, no doubt no question. Sometimes people forget that there is still real value in that.
OK I’m going on a little tour. With the band. Down south then back up to The Heartland. “SXSW.” You know the drill. Just pure American insanity for the sake of it, an attempt to cut through all the bullshit, because man there is a lot of it. Fuck it all. Kicking it off with a rager in NYC (sick flyer made by BLUNT FANG above) and going strong for one week, give or take. Siked to finally jam with the legendary BOBBY CONN in Chitown among a bunch of other highlights. Sometimes it sickens me that I still give a shit, but what do you want me to say? Music: I love it. Keep it positive kids. What the fuck is wrong with my brain? Punk rock 4 ever.

This Friday in the big city, Juiceboxxx live with the backing band and all that, freaking out and taking names and doing it the only way we know how. Great gig at the great Trans Pecos, this bill is stacked my guy! I’m talking the sick rapper Cakes Da Killa and the sick punk band Spewing Cum and don’t forget the sick next gen math rock of Tippwerk and beats by Jaguar Pyramids. That’s right, I just named everyone on the bill. If you are anywhere in the TRI-STATE AREA, this show is a “do not miss” no doubt no question. See you in the pit, you fucking goons!
New fire from the reigning kings of Trip Metal and just all around American music legendsWOLF EYES. I’ve been listening to this band since I was a teenager and I’ve seen them go through lots of twists and turns. With that said, this record right here ranks among one of the best things they have ever done in their almost two decade run. Yeah, it’s that sick!
I could try to compare it to other Wolf Eyes records or say that it is maybe more “song based” and talk about the addition of Crazy Jim into the mix… But fuck all of that, this is just a really great raw rock and roll record done in a fresh style. From The Stooges to Techno, the state of Michigan has always pushed things to the limit, and Wolf Eyes are carrying on a proud freaked out American music tradition. Fucking bang your head!
You can stream the record HERE for the time being. Check it out!
This Friday in Brooklyn. Juiceboxxx and Ed Schrader’s Music Beat: Together again! Always siked to jam with one of the premiere rock action entertainment duos in the USA and this should be a good one. Last time ESMB and I crossed paths was a few months ago in Bmore, where we raged with the almighty TRANSGENDER/VHS. It was sick and tomorrow night should be sick too. Also playing is Mind Dynamics and Houseboy. I got my band with me and you know what? I’m ready to go. Fuck all the bullshit.
Tonight in New York City, it’s going down. Happy fun hideaway. It’s the kickback, my man. This month is a great one one too, because we have Jessica Ciocci as a very special guest, live in the mix. You might know Jessica from Paper Rad, Mass Art Newsletter, Twitter, Instagram, life, etc etc. But her DJ sets are a rare and legendary occasion, so I am truly siked to have her on board for this month’s edition of the kickback. The first time I hard her “Paper Rad Mixtape Club” series of tapes as a teenager, my mind was blown, and things have never been the same since. Expect the unexpected.
The Thunder Zone Kickback: New York City’s Number One Kickback.
That’s right people, JUICEBOXXX has made it into the hallowed halls of Rolling Stone Magazine… Online edition. Some nice people from RS hung out with me for a day of band practice, Dunking Donuts, and then, finally, a live rock and roll Juiceboxxx show. Honestly, it was a lot of fun and I think it turned out pretty OK for what it is… A portrait of a deeply insane man deep in the THUNDER ZONE.
Check it out above and also fucking check it… There is a longform piece of journalism coming soon on the Rolling Stone website about JB and “the book” and life and Rock and Roll. Who really knows? I’ve seen dreams live and die, I’ve freaked out and I’ve tried again, I’ve tried to stay true to my heart, but my dude the world is a confusing place. At the end of the day, playing shows and making records and putting out energy drinks and just doing what gets you siked… That’s really all that matters.
